How to choose an indoor table tennis table

Do you just want to play occasionally at home, or are you looking for a table for regular training (or even for a club)? Indoor tables are designed for dry rooms – you will be rewarded with better ball bounce, stability and longer life.

At Acrasport, you will now find mainly Sponeta indoor tables in several “levels”: from hobby models around 16–19 mm, through training and sports tables (typically 19 mm), to competition 22 mm and ITTF competition (25 mm).

Quick guide: choose according to how you play

1) Occasional play at home / for the family (hobby) – 16–19 mm

Look for easy assembly, wheels and reasonable stability.

Recommended types:

2) Regular training / more demanding recreation – 19 mm (training/sport)

Look for a sturdier frame, better stability when folded and comfortable handling.

3) Competition level (club/school/frequent play) – 22 mm

22 mm already gives a noticeably “cleaner” and more consistent bounce. You also often get a more robust construction, brakes on the wheels and height adjustment of the legs.

4) Competition / tournaments (ITTF) – 25 mm

For clubs and players who want that “tournament” feel: ITTF certification and 25 mm blade.

Please note: some racing models may be without wheels (check the product details).

5) Premium interior design

When you want the table in the room to look good (not just “work”):

What to look for when choosing

1) Thickness of the blade (mm) = the quickest shortcut to the feel of the game

  • 16 mm: recreational play, good for “occasional” use
  • 19 mm: the most common “golden mean” for home and training
  • 22 mm: more competitive bounce and higher stability for frequent play
  • 25 mm: highest level, often ITTF

2) Wheels, castors and brakes
If you will be folding/unfolding the table frequently, consider the handling and locking of the castors. (Some models have castors with brakes.)

3) Storage size (dimensions when folded)
Don’t just think about whether it will fit, but also how you will transport it (doors, hallway, stairs). Hobby tables usually have storage dimensions of around 155 × 74 × 165 cm (always check the specific model).

4) Option for solo training (“replay”)
If you want to train alone, a table where one half can be set up as a rebound wall is suitable.

5) Indoor = dry environment
Indoor tables are not designed for humidity and temperature fluctuations (a humidity limit is typically specified). For an unheated, damp garage, consider an outdoor model.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

✔ How much space do I need around the table to play comfortably?

  • Casual home play (family, recreation):
allow at least 1.5 m at each end + 1.0 m on each side
    → approximately min. 5.8 × 3.5 m of space.
  • Comfortable training (you will run more, longer exchanges):
A good minimum is often considered to be 8 × 4 m of “playing space” per table.
  • Club matches / higher level:
    the recommendation is usually around 10 × 5 m.
  • International standard (ITTF):
    at least 14 × 7 m and a height of 5 m.

How can I tell if the table will have too little bounce?
In practice, the thickness of the tabletop is the most helpful factor: 19 mm is universal, 22 mm is more competitive, and 25 mm is top of the line.

✔  Is the net included in the package?
For many models, yes (this is usually stated directly in the description/specifications), but accessories such as bats and balls are not always included – always check the product details.

✔  Do I have to remove the net when folding?
It depends on the specific design – some tables can be folded without removing the net holder.

✔  Can I put the indoor table in the garage?
Only if it is dry and without large fluctuations – indoor tables are explicitly stated to be not resistant to moisture and conditions such as sun/temperature.

✔  What does ITTF mean for tables?
It is a certification used for tables for competition/tournament use (typically in combination with a 25 mm board and corresponding construction).
