How to Choose Darts and Dartboards

 

Do you want to play darts at home for fun, teach your kids how to throw, or eventually “fine-tune” your darts for more accurate play?

We carry both soft and steel darts, dartboards in various diameters, and basic accessories (flights, shafts, tips).

 

 

 

Quick Selection (Choose Based on How You'll Be Playing)

1) You're playing at home with your kids / you don't want to make holes in the wall

Choose soft (plastic tips) + a perforated dartboard. This is the safest and most “family-friendly” option.

 

2) Do you want a simple "cottage-style" classic (quick to set up and play)?

Select a paper (wound) dartboard + steel darts (metal tips).

 

3) You want it to "fly" more steadily and feel more secure in your hand

Focus mainly on the weight of the darts and accessories (flights, shafts, tips)—this often makes the biggest difference for very little money.

 

 

1) Target

Target Type

  • Perforated (soft): for plastic darts, safer for home use, often suitable for children as well—e.g., ACRA Set 51440
  • Rolled paper: a simple “classic” set, good for occasional fun; keep in mind that this material wears out more quickly—e.g., Acra—28.5 cm Target—metal frame, 4 darts

Diameter (how much space you have + how “large” a target you want)

Diameters available include approx. 25 / 28.5 / 36 / 45 cm.

 

2) Arrows

Soft vs. steel (this is the first deciding factor)

Weight

If you want a versatile option: 18–20 g (soft) / 22–24 g (steel) is a good starting point for most recreational players.

Material and “feel in the hand”

In this category, you’ll often find brass darts (suitable for recreational play and beginners). For example, PIRATE (brass) or SCORPIUS (brass).

 

3) Accessories Worth Adding to Your Cart

Shafts: They change the dart’s “behavior” and are also consumable.

 

 

 

Proper Target Hanging and Standing Distance

To throw “correctly,” all you need to do is pay attention to the height of the center and the distance of the throwing line:

Height of the bullseye’s center from the ground: 1.73 m

Distance of the throwing line (oche) from the front of the target:

  • Steel: 2.37 m
  • Soft: 2.44 m

Tip: Mark the throwing line with tape (or a small mat) so you stand in the same spot every time.

Glossary of Terms

✔ Bull / Bullseye (center of the target)
The exact center of the target. Under classic rules, it is further divided into:

  • Outer bull = the outer center circle (around the exact center)
  • Inner bull / Bullseye = the very smallest center (most valuable)

✔ Single / Single segment
A standard “large” segment area (e.g., 20). It counts for the value of the number.

✔ Double / Double segment A
narrow outer ring. The segment’s value is multiplied by ×2.
Often used to “close out” a game (checkout).

✔ Triple / Triple ring A
narrow ring closer to the center. The segment’s value is multiplied by ×3.
The most common target for scoring.

✔ Segment
: A single “number” on the dartboard (1–20), including its single/double/triple zones.

✔ Oche (throwing line)
The line behind which you stand when throwing. You must not step over it.

✔ Steel tip vs. Soft tip

  • Steel = metal tip (classic dartboard)
  • Soft = plastic tip (perforated/electronic dartboard)

✔ Barrel (dart body)
The metal part you hold. The shape and “grip” (grooves) affect how it feels in your hand.

✔ Grip (texture)
How well the dart “holds” in your fingers. A rougher grip = more secure, but may be less comfortable during extended play.

✔ Shaft The
part between the barrel and the flight. The length and material can affect flight stability.

✔ Flight /
The “wing” of the dart. It affects flight stability and speed (a larger flight usually provides more stability).
