The knees are one of the most vulnerable joints during sports—and yet many athletes forget to protect them. Whether you train in MMA, karate, volleyball, yoga, or wrestling, the right knee guard will help you prevent painful injuries while allowing you to train to the fullest without unnecessary worries.
In our selection, you’ll find RDX MMA knee guards that combine soft padding, a flexible design, and an adjustable closure. This makes them ideal for training where you need protection but don’t want to lose freedom of movement.
In MMA, karate, or wrestling, knee pads help absorb impact during stand-up combat, transitions to the ground, and contact techniques. They protect not only you, but also your training partner to some extent.
Volleyball, basketball, and wrestling put a lot of strain on the knees. Knee pads are useful for landing on the court, making quick changes of direction, or kneeling frequently.
Beginners often haven't quite mastered the movements yet. Knee pads can give them more confidence and reduce the risk of painful impacts while they're practicing their technique.
If you train frequently, protective gear can help reduce discomfort caused by repeated impacts, falls, or contact with the mat. It’s important that they fit well and don’t restrict your movement.
If your knee is painful, swollen, or unstable, or if you’ve recently suffered an injury, a sports knee brace may not be the right solution. In that case, it’s best to consult a doctor or physical therapist and, if necessary, opt for a medical brace.
| Type | What it’s good for | What to watch out for |
| Padded sports guards | Protection against impacts, falls, and contact with the mat. Suitable for MMA, volleyball, basketball, karate, or wrestling. | They should fit snugly on the knee and not restrict movement. |
| Compression sleeves and bandages | Light support, warmth, and a feeling of stability. Suitable for fitness, weight training, or lighter sports. | They do not have significant padding, so they are not suitable for hard impacts. |
| Open-knee pads | They reduce pressure directly on the patella and may fit better around the front of the knee. | More common in supportive bandages and braces than in pure impact protectors. |
| Stabilizing braces with straps or joints | Greater knee stabilization, rehabilitation, or return to sports after an injury. | May be too bulky for regular training. Professional advice is recommended. |

✔ First use: Try out your new pads during a short training session first. This will help the material mold to your body, and you’ll be able to tell more easily if they’re rubbing you in any spots or shifting while you move.
✔ Maintenance: Always clean the pads according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Sweat, moisture, and dirt can deteriorate the material over time and reduce overall comfort.
✔ Wear and tear check: Regularly check the condition of the padding, seams, and fasteners. Reduced cushioning, cracked foam, or a malfunctioning Velcro strap are signs that it’s time for a replacement.
✔ Combine with additional protection: For more intense contact training or sparring, you can also supplement your knee pads with shin guards. Together, they provide better coverage for the stressed areas of the leg during blocks, impacts, and contact techniques.
Should I choose rubber, gel, or foam padding?
EVA foam (as used in RDX MMA guards) is lightweight and provides excellent shock absorption—ideal for combat sports. Gel padding better conforms to the shape of the knee and is suitable for extended wear. A hard plastic shell provides maximum protection during extreme contact but is less comfortable. For the vast majority of combat sports and fitness activities, EVA foam is sufficient.
Do I need to wear knee pads even for light training?
It depends on the intensity. For technical training without contact, it’s not necessary. As soon as sparring, working with a sparring partner, or takedown techniques come into play, we always recommend knee pads—a knee injury can sideline an athlete for weeks or even months.
Can I use the same pads for MMA and volleyball?
For universal padded knee pads, yes. It’s important that they absorb impacts well, stay in place, and don’t restrict movement. For very specific uses, however, a specialized type may be better.
How snug should the pads fit?
They should be secure but comfortable. They must not slip or twist, yet they must not constrict, press, or reduce sensitivity in the leg.
Are knee pads the same as a brace?
No. Sports knee pads are mainly used to protect against impacts and abrasions. A brace is designed to stabilize the knee more and is often used for injuries, pain, or rehabilitation.
Do knee pads help with knee pain?
They can increase comfort during sports, but they are not a substitute for medical treatment. If your knee hurts, swells, buckles, or the pain recurs, it is best to consult a specialist.
How should you care for knee braces?
Let them dry thoroughly after every workout. Don’t leave them closed in a gym bag, where moisture and odors can build up. Clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid harsh chemicals.
