How to Choose a Sleeping Pad

Your sleeping pad determines whether you’ll actually get a good night’s sleep outdoors or just “somehow get through the night.” It’s not just about comfort—a good sleeping pad also insulates you from the cold coming up from the ground and evens out uneven surfaces, so you won’t wake up stiff in the morning. That’s why it makes sense to choose one based on where you’re going, how often you’ll be sleeping outdoors, and how much weight you want to carry on your back.

We offer foam, inflatable, and self-inflating sleeping pads—from simple models for festivals and occasional overnight stays to compact options for lightweight hiking and comfortable sleeping pads for camping, where comfort is the priority.

Quick selection based on what you're working on

1) I want maximum comfort (camping, car, sleeping on my side)

Choose a thicker inflatable sleeping pad—it will even out uneven surfaces much better.

2) I want a lightweight and compact solution for hiking

3) I want convenience without having to go through a lengthy process (a good “middle ground”)

Self-inflating sleeping pads are great when you want comfort but don't want to spend too much time inflating them.

4) I want a simple, durable, and inexpensive classic

Foam sleeping pads are indestructible, quick to set up, and you don't have to worry about punctures.

5) I want an inflatable sleeping pad with a pillow (for extra comfort)

Key Parameters

1) Type of sleeping pad (this is the most important factor)

  • Foam = durability, simplicity, best value for money
  • Inflatable = maximum comfort and packability
  • Self-inflating = comfort + quick setup

2) Thickness (comfort vs. “travel light”)

We typically carry 8–10 mm (foam) and 5–10 cm (inflatable) models.
Generally speaking: the thicker the mat, the more comfortable you’ll sleep (especially on your side and on hard ground).

3) Dimensions (make sure you’ll fit on it)

You’ll usually find lengths of about 180–200 cm and widths of about 50–68 cm.
If you have broader shoulders or tend to toss and turn more at night, the width will make a bigger difference than it seems.

4) Packability and risk of puncture

  • An inflatable or self-inflating mattress fits in a backpack (smaller pack size)
  • If you want absolute peace of mind without having to worry about anything, the foam mattress wins (nothing can burst)

Quick Tips Before You Buy

✔ For weekends and festivals: a quick-inflating foam mat or a lightweight inflatable mat.

✔ For longer stays and a better night’s sleep: self-inflating / more comfortable inflatable.

✔ If it’s cold: choose a thicker model and the right type (and if the manufacturer specifies insulation, all the better)
