✔ Choose a thicker inflatable sleeping pad—it will even out uneven surfaces much better.
✔ An inflatable sleeping pad is usually the most versatile option (compact, lightweight).
✔ Self-inflating sleeping pads are great when you want comfort but don't want to spend too much time inflating them.
✔ Foam sleeping pads are indestructible, quick to set up, and you don't have to worry about punctures.
1) Type of sleeping pad (this is the most important factor)
- Foam = durability, simplicity, best value for money
- Inflatable = maximum comfort and packability
- Self-inflating = comfort + quick setup
2) Thickness (comfort vs. “travel light”)
We typically carry 8–10 mm (foam) and 5–10 cm (inflatable) models.
Generally speaking: the thicker the mat, the more comfortable you’ll sleep (especially on your side and on hard ground).
3) Dimensions (make sure you’ll fit on it)
You’ll usually find lengths of about 180–200 cm and widths of about 50–68 cm.
If you have broader shoulders or tend to toss and turn more at night, the width will make a bigger difference than it seems.
4) Packability and risk of puncture
- An inflatable or self-inflating mattress fits in a backpack (smaller pack size)
- If you want absolute peace of mind without having to worry about anything, the foam mattress wins (nothing can burst)
