How to Choose an Elliptical Trainer?

An elliptical trainer offers a low-impact full-body cardio workout—smooth motion without harsh jolts, making it gentle on your joints and ideal for regular exercise at home.

It engages your legs, glutes, and core—and, thanks to the moving handlebars, often your arms as well—so you can improve your fitness and boost your metabolism all in one workout. In this category, you’ll find both classic “elliptical trainers” and compact under-desk elliptical trainers.

Quick Selection

I want to stay active at work or at home while sitting at a desk, or for rehabilitation
→ consider a mini elliptical trainer (quiet, compact, simple), such as the MERACH E43B1 mini stepper

I want the most affordable option for occasional home use
→ look for models with a shorter stride and lower weight capacity (typically “entry-level”), e.g., the Acra EB5400 elliptical trainer

I want a versatile machine for the whole family (the most common choice)
→ focus mainly on stride comfort + stability + weight capacity, e.g., the Brother BE540 elliptical trainer

I want a sturdy machine that offers stability and comfort even for taller users
→ go for a heavier-duty build and higher weight capacity (often 150 kg for ACRA models), e.g., the ACRA BE51 elliptical trainer

I want programs / more precise resistance control / app
connectivity → choose “programmable” models (electric motor-controlled magnetic brake, better display, more metrics), e.g., BROTHER BE92E elliptical trainer

The 5 Most Important Parameters

1) Stride Length (Ergonomics)

With an elliptical, the most important thing is that the stride length is right for you—otherwise, you’ll end up “scuttling” or, conversely, taking unnaturally long strides. This is also mentioned as a key parameter in buying guides across various online stores.

ACRA’s product lineup typically includes stride lengths such as 32 cm (standard) or 36–42 cm (adjustable).

2) Distance between the footplates (footplate spacing)

Simply put: the more natural your stance, the better it is for your knees and the more comfortable longer workouts will be. ACRA refers to this as the “distance between the skis” for its models (e.g., approx. 17.5–19 cm).

3) Weight capacity + recommended user height

Don’t underestimate this—it’s best to err on the side of caution with the weight capacity. Typical weight capacity levels are listed in this category (e.g., 90 / 110 / 150 kg).

4) Braking system and resistance levels

For home use, the most common type is a magnetic brake (quiet, smooth). In more advanced models, the magnetic brake may be controlled by an electric motor (more comfortable resistance adjustments, “program” mode).

5) Stability (machine weight) + quiet operation (belt)

You can often gauge stability by the machine’s weight—lighter models are better suited for lighter workouts, while sturdier machines are more comfortable during longer workouts. ACRA models, for example, range from 29 kg (basic) to around 50 kg (more robust).

Many models use a flat belt (quiet operation suitable for apartments).

Recommendations Based on Your Needs

A) "Under-desk" mini elliptical (office, active sitting, rehabilitation)

  • MERACH E43B1 mini stepper: compact, “under-desk,” magnetic resistance (8 levels), very quiet operation, suitable for light exercise and warming up.

B) Basic model for casual use (occasional home use)

  • Acra EB5400: magnetic brake (8 levels), 6 kg flywheel, stride length 32 cm, weight capacity 90 kg, recommended height up to 180 cm.

C) Family All-Rounder (most common type)

  • Brother BE540: magnetic resistance (8 levels), 6 kg flywheel, 32 cm stride length, weight capacity 110 kg.

D) More Robust Home Elliptical (stability, taller users, regular training)

  • ACRA BE51: magnetic brake (8 levels), 7 kg flywheel, adjustable stride length 34–42 cm, weight capacity 150 kg, recommended height up to 195 cm.
  • ACRA BE91: magnetic braking system, 9 kg flywheel, stride length 36–42 cm, weight capacity 150 kg, recommended height up to 200 cm.

E) Programmable model + app (for motivation and “smarter” training)

  • BROTHER BE92E: electric motor-controlled magnetic brake, 9 kg flywheel, stride length 36–42 cm, 7" LED display, power in watts, weight capacity 150 kg.

The category page also features an “App” filter, which indicates that training apps can be used via a smartphone or tablet with select models.

A Mini Checklist Before You Buy

✔ Is the stride length right for me (and, ideally, adjustable)?

✔ Do I have enough weight capacity with some leeway and the recommended height?

✔ Is quiet operation important to me (belt, magnetic brake)?

✔ Do I want programs/apps/wattage, or is a basic display enough for me?

✔ If I have sensitive knees, I also pay attention to the footplate spacing (“distance between the footplates”).
