How to Choose Badminton Equipment

Whether you just want to hit a few shots in your backyard, on vacation, or take it a little more seriously, badminton is the ideal sport: compact, fast-paced, and fun.

The biggest difference in your game usually comes down to the right racket, the type of shuttlecock, and, most importantly, whether you’re playing outdoors or indoors. At ACRA, you’ll find a complete selection of equipment for beginners and regular players alike—rackets, shuttlecocks, and ready-to-play sets so you can get started right away.

Quick Guide

1) I just want to play for fun (with family / occasionally)

Who it's for: Occasional use in the garden, at the cottage, with kids, or on vacation.
What to consider: Mainly durability and an easy start.

Recommendation (quickest setup):

2) I want to participate regularly (club / school / more frequent play)

Who it's for: You play several times a week, with a group of people, both indoors and outdoors.
What to consider: More rackets, a supply of shuttlecocks, and "consumables" (shuttlecocks just wear out).

Recommendation (practical for groups):

3) I want the game to be as accurate as possible (arena / technique)

Who it's for: Players who want better control and a cleaner, more technical game, typically indoors.
What to consider: A lighter, more agile racket—and feel free to fine-tune the string pattern (that will make a difference in how the racket feels).

1) How to Choose a Badminton Racket

Frame Material (and Durability)

  • Steel / aluminum (ALU): typically more durable for “family use,” great for recreational play.
  • Graphite: lighter, more responsive, more comfortable for regular play (and technique).
(ACRA’s badminton lineup includes both aluminum and graphite models, for example.)

Weight and maneuverability

  • Lighter racket = faster reactions at the net, less hand fatigue.
  • Heavier / sturdier = often more durable, tends to be good for beginners and outdoor play.

Balance

  • Head-heavy: more power on shots (great for recreational play).
  • Hand-heavy / balanced: more control and speed (good for indoor play).

Grip

  • If the racket spins in your hand → the grip is too thin or slippery.
  • If your palm starts to hurt after a while → the grip might be too thick.
(Try a thinner overgrip / remove one layer, or choose a smaller grip.)

2) Nests: Plastic vs. Feathers (and Why It Matters)

Plastic (nylon)

  • The most durable option, ideal for outdoor use, beginners, schools, and families.
  • The flight is “okay,” but less forgiving in terms of technique.

Feather

  • Best flight characteristics (typically for indoor use / for more advanced players).
  • Usually less resistant to bad hits and outdoor wind.

3) Badminton Sets: The Fastest Way to Get Started

This set is ideal if:

  • you don’t want to worry about anything and want everything in one package,
  • you’re buying badminton gear for your vacation home, vacation, or family,
  • you’re setting up a club or want to play with a group.

ACRA’s selection includes, for example, sets for 2 players as well as sets for 4 players, often including shuttlecocks and sometimes even a net.

4) String: a subtle detail that changes the feel of the game

If you already have a racket and want to “take it to the next level”:

  • higher string tension = more control (but less margin for error),
  • lower tension = more comfort, less vibration, “easier play.”

ACRA also offers badminton strings (nylon/titanium/competition) in its badminton category.

Tips & Tricks

Always use a nylon bag when outdoors—the wind and grass often have a way of “messing with” down.

✔ Store the basket in a container (not in your backpack among your other gear)—this will extend its lifespan.

✔ If the shuttlecock is flying strangely, it’s usually not your fault—it’s often just “soft” or worn out.

✔ A two-minute warm-up (wrists + shoulders) makes a bigger difference than a “better racket.”

✔ Don’t grip the racket too tightly all the time—hold it loosely and apply pressure only at the moment of impact; this allows your wrist to move faster and more accurately.
